The « Centre Cardio-Pédiatrique Cuomo (CCPC) » of Dakar, Senegal, which had already started its medical appointments last November initiated its surgical operations this month.
Since January 16, the medical staff of the health facility, composed by both African and European personnel, carry out heart surgeries at the new premises. This is an unprecedented achievement for a Western African country given that the whole region was not, until now, equipped neither with infrastructure, nor with human resources capable of practicing complex cardiac operations on under-age children.
The official opening of the Centre is due the first quarter of 2017. But the medical facility, fully funded by the Cuomo Foundation, already started saving lives and will gradually achieve its initial objective: undertake 500 surgeries annually.
